Determined to Graduate

Mt. Clemens Career Center

Jeannette Hartman, 23, came to the Mt. Clemens Michigan Works! Career Center in October of 2016 looking to finish her high school diploma. Jeannette knew that obtaining a high school diploma was key to unlocking her career potential. She was pregnant with her second child and determined to earn a high school diploma before giving birth. With only one credit left, Jeannette’s goal was in her grasp.

Jeannette enrolled with the Michigan Works! Young Professionals and with the help of her case manager, Jeannette researched different high school completion options. Jeanette selected Cyber Education Center which offered the flexibility of an online high school completion program and the convenience of being able to work on her studies at the Career Center. At the Career Center, she had accessibility to a computer, tutoring, and encouragement from staff as she progressed toward earning a high school diploma.

Completing the requirements for a diploma in approximately two months, Jeanette met her goal a few weeks before the birth of her baby.

Looking to become job ready, Jeannette participated in the Young Professionals’ Empowerment Workshops including interview skills plus mock interviews, résumé development, and job applications.

Polishing her résumé and perfecting her interviewing skills helped Jeannette secure a job. She is currently managing the daily operations of two gas stations.

With an interest in a career in the health industry, Jeannette’s future plans are to enroll at Macomb Community College. Jeannette’s advice to other people in similar situations is “Never say you can’t do something. Being negative will not bring positive results!”
