Credentials Lead to Job Offer
Port Huron Career Center
Kathryn (Katie) Talbot, 21, of Port Huron, started the Computer Skills for the Office program at St. Clair County Community College (SC4) on September 19, 2017. She quickly earned her IC3 certification and her Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certifications in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access.
Because she was able to update her resume to include these credentials, on November 6, Katie started her new job as Administrative Office Assistant at McCarthy and Smith Construction Company based in Farmington Hills. She will be working out of their Port Huron location. Katie used the SC4 Job Connect website to find the job.
Katie was born in Cadillac Michigan and spent her 16th birthday in foster care. She was in three different foster homes before she graduated from Forest Area High School in 2014. Katie moved to Port Huron in 2015 and is now married and the mother of a beautiful baby girl, Annebelle.
“I decided to do the Computer Skills for the Office because I have past experience but no certifications to prove it,” says Katie. “Not only was I able to earn my certifications, but I gained the confidence I needed to apply for my new job.”
She plans to continue her studies at SC4 on a part-time basis to secure her Microsoft Office Expert certifications.
As a Michigan Works! participant of the Partnership, Accountability, Training and Hope (PATH) program, Katie’s tuition for the training at SC4 was funded through PATH.
