1 – 4+ years. The length of apprenticeship depends on how long it takes to fully train someone in the occupation.

Apprenticeship training includes paid employment, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally recognized credential. Apprenticeships last for a longer period of time, are more structured, and offer more mentorship than internships. Some apprenticeships also offer college credit.

Terrell was hired at Drake Enterprises, Inc. on 12/13/21. He quickly displayed a desire to grow and learn in his position. He began our CNC Operator Apprenticeship in August of 2022 and has shown extensive growth ever since. Evylon [from Michigan Works!] worked closely with Terrell and Drake to provide On-the-Job Training dollars to ensure both he and the new Apprenticeship program were successful. Additionally, Evylon provided resources to Terrell that reduced some of the barriers he had in juggling all his responsibilities with work and school. He has displayed a tremendous degree of integrity, responsibility, and ambition toward his education. Terrell was recognized for being the only student in his class with no errors on any assignments or exams for the entire semester. Working full time while learning on-the-job and going to school after work while balancing his responsibilities with his family is not easy. Terrell is accomplishing all of this!

Prior to beginning my apprenticeship program, I was working as a bartender. The hours were mostly evenings and the hours and pay weren't steady. I realized I wasn't really going anywhere with my future job potential. I was hired at Drake Enterprises as a CNC Machinist. I am in their Registered Apprenticeship Program. I am working on-the-job, and am also taking classes at the Advanced Tech Center [at Macomb Community College]. I am earning money while I work and learn at the same time. I am learning a lot in the manufacturing field. When I complete the apprenticeship program I will receive a Certificate of Completion as a Journeyworker. I look forward to earning my Journeyworker certificate so I am able to work in a field that has steady employment, a good rate of pay, and a job that I enjoy.
